3rd Annual Bi-National Beaver Survey

3rd Annual Bi-National Beaver Survey

Watershed Management Group
Mar 2 2024 - 9:00am
Through the River Run Network, WMG has been working to survey beaver populations along the San Pedro River on both sides of the border, and you can help! Beavers are one of the best local helpers for restoring desert creeks and rivers, and we look forward to hosting this annual survey once again to support healthy beaver populations in our desert watersheds. Come search for signs of beavers all while taking in the beautiful views the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) has to offer. Be a part of a team in a bi-national effort to further understand beaver activity in Southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico.

During this event, we will be hiking along and in the San Pedro River on the United States side in search of beaver activity such as beaver dams, lodges, and chews. This will be a physically demanding activity. We will be walking several miles, including walking in ankle to knee-deep water and tall grass along the riverbank in possibly cold weather, so you will need to be comfortable getting your feet and legs wet and walking in wet sand.

Small groups with a lead person will survey 4-6 mile sections of the river. The lead will organize carpooling and shuttles. This event will take place in several areas of the San Pedro River near Sierra vista. Travel time from Tucson is approximately 1.5 hours.

This year, surveys will take place on Saturday, March 2nd and Sunday, March 3rd, with an optional camp out on Saturday night. Please only register for the day(s) you are planning to attend the survey.
